Mike & Reba

In November of 2011, Mike and I said our vows near the Buffalo River in the beautiful Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. Little did I know upon our engagement, the man I wanted to marry was heir to about 100 beautiful acres of farmland just 60 miles from the ceremony.

We said our "I do's" and hit the road to the California.  There we flew to New Zealand and spent the next three months traveling, WWOOFing, and exploring the beautiful country. When we returned to the states we explored farms in California and began volunteering on the Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas. Six months later we returned to our home in Little Rock with every intention of starting our own organic farm.

We want a simpler life. We want to be connected to our food, our land, each other and our community. We want to raise kids in a healthy, safe environment. We want to own less and do more.

We have land, but it comes with challenges.  There's no house or utilities.  It's in the heart of the land being drilled for natural gas - which creates a busy highway running next to our prime gardening area and a whole lot of other concerns. The land has had cattle on it for 100's of years, but with very little management. We are determined to make it work: to build our own home, raise our own food and share the land with others. We dream of an orchard, a large garden, cattle, dairy goats, a few pigs, honey bees and a lot of chooks.

So this will be our journey. One of resourcefulness, ingenuity, generosity and hopefully, success.  This is a tale of life and dirt.

  1. I am so proud of you both, and delighted that the land is getting used. Mike looks so relaxed these days, like he's found his purpose.
